Studio Plesungan menjadi tuan rumah residensi bagi Darlane Litaay dari Papua dan Tian Rotteveel dari Berlin, dengan harapan dapat menyediakan ruang yang kondusif bagi proses pertukaran ide, eksplorasi, dan penciptaan karya bersama di antara keduanya.
Layaknya sebuah kencan buta yang bisa menjadi awal dari kisah cinta yang penuh gairah, pertemuan semacam itu juga dapat memicu kolaborasi artistik yang tak terduga. Berangkat dari gagasan unik ini, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm dan Goethe-Institut Indonesia mempertemukan dua pasang koreografer dan seniman rupa dari Indonesia dan Jerman dalam proyek bertajuk “Choreographers’ LAB.”
Choreographers’ LAB merupakan proyek kolaboratif antara Künstlerhaus Mousonturm dan Goethe-Institut Indonesia, didanai oleh Kulturstiftung des Bundes. Proyek ini didukung oleh deSingel (Antwerpen), Studio Plesungan (Surakarta), Komunitas Salihara (Jakarta), Tanzfabrik (Berlin), serta Komite Nasional Indonesia untuk Program Tamu Kehormatan – Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 – Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia.
Proyek ini dilaksanakan dalam kerangka Indonesia LAB, sebuah kerja sama antara Frankfurt LAB, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, Ensemble Modern, Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Städelschule dan Portikus, Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main, Hessische Theaterakademie, serta Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, bekerja sama dengan Goethe-Institut Indonesia.
Studio Plesungan hosted the residency of Darlane Litaay from Papua and Tian Rotteveel from Berlin, aiming to provide a space that nurtures dialogue, experimentation, and collaborative creation between the two artists.
Like a blind date that can spark a passionate love story, such encounters can also give rise to unexpected artistic collaborations. Inspired by this unique idea, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and the Goethe-Institut Indonesia brought together two pairs of choreographers and visual artists from Indonesia and Germany in a project titled “Choreographers’ LAB.”
Choreographers’ LAB is a joint project by Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and the Goethe-Institut Indonesia, funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes. The project is supported by deSingel (Antwerp), Studio Plesungan (Surakarta), Komunitas Salihara (Jakarta), Tanzfabrik (Berlin), and the Indonesian National Committee for the Guest of Honour Program – Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 – Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia.

Darlane Litaay (lahir 1984, Sorong, Papua) adalah seorang koreografer, performer, dan seniman lintas disiplin yang karya-karyanya berakar kuat pada warisan budaya Melanesia. Lulusan Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta ini telah menciptakan lebih dari 30 karya tari kontemporer yang mengeksplorasi persimpangan antara ritual, tubuh, dan narasi sosial-politik.
Dalam satu dekade terakhir, Darlane telah mempersembahkan karyanya di berbagai festival dan ruang seni di Asia Tenggara, Eropa, Australia, dan Amerika Serikat. Pada tahun 2024, ia menggarap koreografi Samanim, sebuah opera ratapan karya Septina Layan, yang dipentaskan di Irian Creative Week di Jayapura dan festival Indonesia Bertutur di Nusa Dua, Bali . Karya koreografinya tahun 2023, Ikan Mati, ditampilkan di Festival Kesenian Indonesia ke-11 (FKI) di ISI Denpasar .
Darlane juga aktif dalam residensi dan kolaborasi internasional, termasuk program ChoreoLab Southeast Asia bersama Arco Renz di Malaysia, serta pertunjukan di Mousonturm Frankfurt, Studio Plesungan di Surakarta, dan Festival Danau Sentani di Papua. Darlane Litaay (b. 1984, Sorong, Papua) is a choreographer, performer, and interdisciplinary artist whose work draws deeply from his Melanesian heritage. A graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, Darlane has created over 30 contemporary works that explore the intersections of ritual, embodiment, and socio-political narratives.
Over the past decade, Darlane has presented his works across Southeast Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States. In 2024, he choreographed Samanim, a lament opera composed by Septina Layan, which was performed at the Irian Creative Week in Jayapura and at the Indonesia Bertutur festival in Nusa Dua, Bali . His 2023 choreography Ikan Mati was featured at the 11th Indonesian Arts Festival (FKI) at ISI Denpasar .
Darlane has participated in international residencies and collaborations, including the ChoreoLab Southeast Asia program with Arco Renz in Malaysia, and performances at Mousonturm Frankfurt, Studio Plesungan in Surakarta, and the Festival Danau Sentani in Papua. In 2025, he premiered his solo performance Spell at Connecticut College in the United States .
In addition to his performance work, Darlane engages in research and education. He has collaborated with Choy Ka Fai’s “Dance Clinic” project, exploring altered states of consciousness in dance through neuro-feedback and digital technology . He also serves as a lecturer and mentor at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts and Culture (ISBI) Tanah Papua.

Tian Rotteveel (Belanda/Jerman, lahir 1984) meraih gelar Magister Komposisi Musik dari Royal Conservatory di Den Haag (KMT Holland), dan kemudian melanjutkan studi koreografi dan tari di HZT/UDK Berlin, lulus dengan gelar Sarjana pada tahun 2014.
Bekerja lintas bidang antara musik dan koreografi, Tian mengeksplorasi sifat yang saling bertukar antara gerak, suara, dan bahasa—memperlakukan ketiganya sebagai bentuk intensitas murni. Dalam proses artistiknya, suara dan gerak dapat mewujud menjadi makna, bahasa, atau musik, maupun hadir sebagai sensasi dan energi yang mentah.
Karya solonya Soulsqueezing (2011) menjadi debut Tian sebagai koreografer, memadukan musik dan tari dalam satu pengalaman artistik. Karya ini telah dipentaskan secara luas di berbagai festival dan ruang pertunjukan, dan masih terus dipertunjukkan hingga kini.

Tian Rotteveel (NL/DE, b. 1984) holds a Master’s degree in Music Composition from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (KMT Holland) and later pursued studies in choreography and dance at HZT/UDK Berlin, graduating with a BA in 2014.
Working across music and choreography, Tian explores the interchangeable nature of movement, sound, and language—treating them as forms of pure intensity. In his artistic process, sound and movement may materialize into meaning, language, or music, or simply exist as raw sensation and energy.
His solo choreography Soulsqueezing (2011) marked his debut in the dance-making scene, merging music and dance into a singular experience. The piece has been widely presented at numerous festivals and venues, and continues to tour.
As a composer and performer, Tian has collaborated with a range of artists including Diego Gil, Lea Martini, Anja Müller, David Zambrano, Jeremy Wade, Tino Sehgal, Christoph Winkler, Willy Prager, and Hermann Heisig, among others.
He also teaches voice and movement research, and has been invited as a guest lecturer at institutions such as SEAD, Meg Stuart/Damaged Goods, Goethe-Institut Sofia, and Plesna Izba Maribor, among others.
