Sebuah Kencan Buta yang Kreatif Antara Koreografer Indonesia dan Jerman
Seperti halnya kencan buta yang dapat menjadi titik awal dari kisah cinta yang menggairahkan, ia juga dapat menjadi awal dari pertemuan artistik yang tidak biasa. Menindaklanjuti konsep unik ini, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm dan Goethe-Institut di Indonesia telah mempertemukan dua pasang koreografer serta perupa Indonesia dan Jerman pada proyek “Choreographers’LAB”.
Selama beberapa bulan, dua pasangan yang terdiri dari Fitri Setyaningsih dan Nicola Mascia serta Elia Nurvista dan Josh Johnson, telah bertemu beberapa kali di Indonesia maupun di Jerman untuk membicarakan lebih lanjut tentang karya mereka dan mengembangkan ide-ide artistik mereka bersama-sama. Hasil pertemuan mereka akan ditampilkan untuk pertama kalinya di Indonesia, yaitu di Jakarta pada 23 Oktober 2015 dan di Surakarta pada 26 Oktober 2015.
Fitri Setyaningsih berkarya di antara batas-batas seni tari dan seni rupa serta praktik praktik kebudayaan lainnya. Dari teknik batik ia mengembangkan struktur-struktur koreografis, dari botol-botol plastik air kemasan ia membuat kostum yang membungkus tubuh penari bagaikan patung. Berpikir secara lintas batas seperti itu adalah cara kerja yang juga disenangi rekannya dari Berlin yang juga seorang koreografer, Nicola Mascia. Mereka memilih untuk memulai eksplorasi mereka dari ketertarikan dan cara pikir yang sama itu lalu meneliti tubuh, apa yang melingkupi tubuh dan ruang yang dibentuk oleh tubuh.
Sementara itu, pasangan seniman lainnya, Elia Nurvista, perempuan perupa dari Yogyakarta dan Josh Johnson, penari mantan anggota Kelompok Forsythe, juga dengan cepat menemukan pijakan yang sama yaitu makan dan makanan. Berdasarkan pameo, “Kamu adalah apa yang kamu makan!” mereka bertukar cerita mengenai kebiasaan makan di Indonesia, Jerman dan Amerika Serikat dan mengeksplorasi implikasi dari aspek-aspek ketubuhan dan sosial-ekonomi makanan.
“Choreographers’LAB” adalah bagian dari Indonesia LAB, sebuah program kolaborasi dari enam institusi kebudayaan ternama dari Frankfurt, Jerman. Didukung oleh Goethe-Institut di Indonesia, Kulturstiftung des Bundes (Yayasan Federal Budaya Jerman) dan kfW Stiftung, institusi-institusi ini mengadakan kolaborasi artistik yang meliputi bidang musik, tari dan seni visual dengan mengundang seniman-seniman yang luar biasa dari Indonesia dan Jerman untuk bekerja sama. Baik karya dari Fitri Setyaningsih dan Nicola Mascia maupun Elia Nurvista dan Josh Johnson telah ditampilkan di Frankfurt awal Oktober 2015.
Penampilan mereka di Indonesia adalah bagian dari Jerman Fest. Jerman Fest adalah sebuah inisiatif dari Kementerian Luar Negeri Jerman dan diselenggarakan oleh Goethe-Institut di Indonesia, Kedutaan Besar Jerman di Jakarta dan EKONID.

A Creative Blind Date Between Indonesian and German Choreographers
Just as blind dates can become the starting point for exciting love affairs, they can also be the beginning of unusual artistic encounters. Following this unique concept, the Mousonturm and Goethe-Institut Indonesien has brought together two pairs of Indonesian-German choreographers and visual artists for the project “Choreographers’LAB”.
Over the past months, these two pairs, consisting of Fitri Setyaningsih and Nicola Mascia as well as Elia Nurvista & Josh Johnson, have met a couple of times both in Indonesia and Germany to talk about their work and develop artistic ideas together.
The extraordinary results will be shown for the first time in Indonesia in Jakarta on 23 October as well as in Surakarta on 26 October.
In her pieces, Fitri Setyaningsih walks the line between choreography, visual arts and other cultural practices. She develops choreographic structures out of batik techniques and costumes out of plastic bottles that envelope the dancers like sculptures. This form of transgressive thinking is shared by Fitri Setyaningsih’s German counterpart Nicola Mascia from Berlin; they chose to take their shared interest as a starting point for encounters in which they explore the body, what encases it and the spaces it produces.
The second artistic duo also quickly found common ground: both visual artist and food researcher Elia Nurvista and Ex- Forsythe dancer Josh Johnson share a passion about food. To them, food is more than just flavor and taste. Following the motto “You are what you eat”, they instead delve into the eating habits of Indonesia, Germany, the USA and explore their physical and socio-economic implications.
“Choreographers’LAB” is part of Indonesia LAB, a cooperation platform by six renowned cultural institutes from Frankfurt, Germany. With the support of Goethe-Institut Indonesien, Kulturstiftung des Bundes (Federal Cultural Foundation of Germany) and KfW Stiftung, these institutions have initiated artistic collaborations in the fields of music, dance, performance and art, by inviting outstanding artists from Indonesia and Germany to work together. The pieces by Fitri Setyaningsih and Nicola Mascia as well as Elia Nurvista and Josh Johnson have already been presented in Frankfurt in early October 2015
The performances in Indonesia are part of the German Season. The German Season is an initiative of the Federal Foreign Office in Germany and is organized by the Goethe-Institut Indonesien, the German Embassy Jakarta and EKONID.

Choreography of the Atmosphere
Kolaborasi antara Elia Nurvista & Josh Johnson
“Choreography of the Atmosphere” adalah proyek kolaboratif antara seniman visual asal Indonesia, Elia Nurvista, dan koreografer serta performer asal Amerika Serikat, Josh Johnson. Pertemuan mereka dimulai dalam kerangka program Choreographers’ Lab, diawali secara daring, lalu berlanjut secara langsung di Tokyo dan Yogyakarta, dengan fasilitasi dari dramaturg Anna Wagner (Mousonturm).
Proyek ini melintasi batas antara seni pertunjukan dan seni rupa, menggabungkan latar belakang Elia yang berfokus pada performans berbasis makanan dan ritual sosial, dengan pendekatan Josh yang menjelajahi koreografi sebagai pengalaman visual dan spasial. Bersama-sama, mereka menciptakan sebuah “perjamuan performatif”, di mana makan malam menjadi media pertemuan antara penonton dan performer, dan ruang diatur menjadi ladang koreografi bagi cahaya, makanan, dan tubuh.
Mengambil inspirasi dari Kitchen Debate antara Nixon dan Khrushchev serta konsep “TV dinner” dari era pasca-perang, kolaborasi ini mengeksplorasi tema peran sosial, perawatan diri, dan politik domestik. Makan malam tidak sekadar aktivitas konsumsi, melainkan menjadi ruang kontemplasi atas relasi kuasa, waktu bersama, dan bentuk-bentuk kehadiran bersama.
Alih-alih meleburkan dua disiplin menjadi satu, Elia dan Josh menciptakan tumpang-tindih antara pendekatan mereka masing-masing. Dalam proyek ini, koreografi tidak selalu berarti gerak tubuh; ia bisa berarti susunan sensasi, atmosfer, objek, hingga keterlibatan kolektif. Format ini lentur, terbuka untuk adaptasi lintas konteks, dan mengundang setiap partisipan untuk mengalami, merasakan, dan menafsirkan dengan cara mereka sendiri.
Choreography of the Atmosphere
A collaboration between visual artist Elia Nurvista and choreographer Josh Johnson
Initiated through the Choreographers’ Lab, the collaboration between Indonesian visual artist Elia Nurvista and American choreographer Josh Johnson began with a virtual meeting, followed by encounters in Tokyo and Yogyakarta. Brought together by dramaturg Anna Wagner, their partnership merges distinct artistic sensibilities—Elia’s practice rooted in performative installations around food and social rituals, and Josh’s exploration of choreography as visual and experiential art.
Their joint project departs from traditional dance or visual art frameworks, blending performance with communal experiences. Central to their collaboration is a “performative dinner”—an event that challenges conventional roles of performer and audience. The dinner itself becomes a shared stage, where light, food, space, and the act of eating become choreographic elements. The audience, by participating in the meal, also performs.
Drawing from historical and cultural references—such as the Cold War-era Kitchen Debates and the symbolism of TV dinners—the project reflects on shifting social roles, domesticity, and care. While Josh is interested in how the viewer-performer boundary can dissolve, Elia brings focus to everyday rituals and their political dimensions.
Rather than fusing their practices into a singular form, their collaboration respects each other’s language while creating overlaps. It is a choreography not only of bodies, but of sensation, atmosphere, and encounter—a flexible format that adapts to context and invites open interpretation.
Elia Nurvista
Elia Nurvista lahir di Yogyakarta pada tahun 1983. Ia menyelesaikan studi di bidang Desain Interior di Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. Dalam praktik artistiknya, Elia tertarik mengeksplorasi berbagai medium seni melalui pendekatan interdisipliner, dengan fokus utama pada wacana seputar makanan dan isu-isu sosial yang menyertainya. Dalam proyeknya yang berjudul Adiboga Wonoasri (yang berarti “santapan istimewa Wonoasri”), ia menciptakan ruang interaktif yang mengajak publik bereksperimen membuat menu fine dining dari bahan-bahan yang tidak lazim dikonsumsi.
Pada tahun 2015, Elia turut mendirikan kelompok studi Bakudapan, sebuah kolektif riset yang menelaah persoalan pangan dalam konteks sosial, politik, dan budaya. Elia telah berpartisipasi dalam berbagai pameran dan program residensi seni baik di Indonesia maupun mancanegara. Saat ini ia tinggal dan berkarya di Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Josh Johnson
Josh Johnson lahir di Mission Hills, California (AS). Ia memulai pelatihan tari bersama Eartha Robinson dan Otis Sallid, serta menempuh pendidikan di Hollywood High School di bawah arahan Keny Long. Ia juga merupakan murid di Marat Daukayev School of Ballet. Josh pernah menjadi penari untuk Ailey II, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, serta The Francesca Harper Project. Antara tahun 2010 hingga pertengahan 2015, ia menjadi anggota tetap The Forsythe Company.
Bersama Cyril Baldy, Josh turut mendirikan Sad, sebuah platform pengarahan artistik yang bergerak di berbagai bidang kreatif seperti koreografi, seni rupa, musik, film, dan fesyen. Melalui praktik multidisipliner ini, Josh terus mengeksplorasi batas-batas antara tubuh, ruang, dan persepsi dalam konteks pertunjukan dan seni visual.
Elia Nurvista
Born in Yogyakarta in 1983, Elia Nurvista studied Interior Design at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. Her artistic practice spans various media with an interdisciplinary approach, focusing primarily on the politics and social dimensions of food. In her project Adiboga Wonoasri (“Wonoasri Fine Dining”), she created an interactive space where participants were invited to experiment with fine dining concepts using unconventional, non-edible materials.
In 2015, she co-founded Bakudapan, a food study collective that conducts research into food issues within socio-political and cultural contexts. Elia has participated in numerous exhibitions and artist residencies both in Indonesia and abroad. She currently lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Josh Johnson
Josh Johnson was born in Mission Hills, California, USA. He began his dance training with Eartha Robinson and Otis Sallid, and studied at Hollywood High School under the direction of Keny Long. He later trained at the Marat Daukayev School of Ballet. Josh has performed with Ailey II, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and The Francesca Harper Project. From 2010 until the summer of 2015, he was a member of The Forsythe Company.
Together with Cyril Baldy, Josh co-founded Sad, a multidisciplinary art direction platform. Sad engages in diverse creative fields including choreography, visual art, music, film, and fashion. Through this collaborative platform, Josh continues to explore the boundaries between movement, space, and perception in performance and visual art.
