On Stage edisi kali ini akan menghadirkan karya “PING” oleh Ela Mutiara.  Karya ini berawal dari ingatan atas pengalaman masa kecil Ela sebagai penonton Bajidoran, salah satu seni pertunjukan rakyat Sunda, Jawa Barat. Hal ini menjadi pintu masuk Ela untuk menyaksikan kedudukan pinggul pada perempuan yang secara umum dianggap sebagai simbol kesuburan. Pinggul perempuan umum dikaitkan sebagai pusat seksualitas; bersifat ekspresif, personal, dan intim. Namun bagi Ela, pinggul adalah poros gerak yang memuat ragam makna, membentang peristiwa di masa lalu dan masa kini. Melalui “PING” Ela melihat pinggul berada di antara yang transenden dan profan, yang privat dan publik, serta menghubungkan antara tubuh dan panggung. Melalui karya ini, Ela memaknai pinggul sebagai simbol yang digerakkan sekaligus menggerakkan, adaptif pada gerak zaman.

On Stage merupakan program rutin Studio Plesungan yang mempertunjukkan karya seni dari berbagai genre dan latar belakang, Hadir setiap dua bulan sekali, penyelenggaraan On Stage ditujukan untuk meningkatkan apresiasi publik terhadap karya-karya kontemporer melalui penyajian karya seniman terpilih dan bincang publik bersama seniman. On Stage dirancang juga untuk meningkatkan silaturahmi antar pekerja seni mandiri dan khalayak seni yang lebih luas.

This edition of On Stage presents PING, a work by Ela Mutiara. Rooted in her childhood memories of watching Bajidoran—a traditional Sundanese folk performance from West Java—this piece becomes Ela’s point of departure for contemplating the significance of the hips in women’s bodies, widely perceived as a symbol of fertility. Often associated with sexuality, the hips are seen as expressive, personal, and intimate. Yet for Ela, the hips are a pivotal axis of movement, rich with layered meanings that stretch across time—from past events to present realities.

In PING, the hips are imagined as oscillating between the transcendent and the profane, the private and the public, linking the body with the stage. Through this work, Ela reimagines the hips not merely as a symbol but as both mover and moved—adaptive to the motion of time itself.

On Stage is a regular program by Studio Plesungan that showcases artistic works from diverse genres and backgrounds. Held every two months, the program aims to cultivate public appreciation for contemporary art by presenting works by selected artists, followed by public conversations with the creators. On Stage is also designed to foster meaningful connections between independent artists and a wider arts audience.

Ela Mutiara adalah koreografer dan penari kelahiran Sukabumi, Jawa Barat. Menyelesaikan studi masternya pada program Penciptaan Seni di Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta. Sejak 2016, praktik tarinya banyak menelusuri peristiwa sejarah, tradisi, pola hidup dan perempuan, dalam perspektif sosial budaya Sunda. Auto-etnografi menjadi metode kerja yang dikembangkan dalam riset dan proses kreatifnya, menempatkan tubuh sebagai medium utama yang diekspresikan melalui karya tari, video, performance art dan pameran. Sejak 2020- sekarang, Ela mulai mempertanyakan bagaimana pinggul dan gerak pinggul hadir dalam tari kerakyatan Sunda. Pertanyaan ini telah membawanya pada pencarian panjang yang menelusuri sejarah, konteks, makna, serta eksistensi pinggul hari ini. Riset ini menjadi medan artistik dalam kerja studio yang masih dikembangkan hingga saat ini.

Ela Mutiara is a choreographer and dancer born in Sukabumi, West Java. She completed her Master’s degree in Artistic Creation at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. Since 2016, her dance practice has explored historical events, traditions, ways of life, and the role of women—particularly through the lens of Sundanese socio-cultural perspectives. Auto-ethnography has become a central methodology in her research and creative process, with the body positioned as the primary medium—expressed through dance, video, performance art, and exhibition.

Since 2020, Ela has been investigating the presence and function of the hips and hip movements in Sundanese folk dance. This line of inquiry has led her on an extended journey through history, context, meaning, and the current existence of the hips. This ongoing research forms the artistic field of her studio practice, which continues to evolve to this day.
