Rakini’s work can be described as hybrid theatre/performance art. She often includes text, her own visual art, film, and original music. She has collaborated with artists from diverse practices who share her interest in creating art that challenges our notions on race, culture, social issues and new technologies .
Born in Calcutta of Indian and Burmese parents, Rakini trained in Bharata Natyam & Odissi Indian Classical Dance before immigrating to Australia and developing her exploration into cross-cultural dance techniques with her company Kalika Dance Company.
Since 1998, she has developed her solo repertoire, often collaborating with other artists or choreographing for large ensembles.
Awards for her innovative work include an Australia Council Dance Fellowship a WA Creative Development Grant, and two Asialink artist residencies (Tokyo 2001 and India 2007)
She is an International troupe member of Guillermo Gomez Pena’s La Pocha Nostra since 2003.
