LISETTE ROS
Lisette Ros has been with us at Studio Plesungan as our Artist in Resident at our studio space, with her project, titled: ‘My Self, the (Unfamiliar) Roots’.
Lisette’s project, ‘My Self, the (Unfamiliar) Roots’, is the sixth part of her ongoing research series titled ‘My Self’. It started with the first part titled ‘My Self, the Fetus’ in 2015, researching the well-known convention of “just being yourself.” In Dutch it’s a common saying: “gewoon lekker jezelf zijn.” But what does that actually mean and contain, being yourself?
From this moment on Lisette Ros started an in depth research into the Self and the identification process, by using her own body as a tool. This sequence now exists of five parts deriving from each other. All the five parts are still being performed and exhibited, as the process is the work.
During the residency at Studio Plesungan she started to develop the sixth part of the ‘My Self’ series. This upcoming new part is about unfamiliar roots, and is about investigating her Indonesian roots, coming from her grandfather. She intends to further discover this part of her self, explore like a child by being in this new field and interact with people from different disciplines on Indonesian ground. At the same time she reached out to people with similar feelings of having unfamiliar roots, in Indonesia but also in Lisette’s home-country The Netherlands to learn more about this in a broadest sense of the word.
In this project Lisette is “questioning how these (unfamiliar) roots live and manifest in our ‘selves’? Can I find out if these roots are (sub)consciously present in everyday life and within my arts?”
We have been observing Lisette Ros’s works and practices in performance art she has done in the past. As an organization which focuses on the development of performance art practice within the local and global cultural environment, we consider that her proposed project as an important project to be contextualy realised in Indonesia.
Lisette Ros has connducted a workshop, and presented a public performance and an Artist Talk, at the end of her residency .
Lisette Ros (NL, 1991) is a conceptual and performance artist. She uses her body as a tool in order to do research: as a quest towards society, unmasking how mechanisms work; conditioned by an understructure rooted in our basic, daily behavior, and as a quest towards her own, fluid identity: who is she, in the midst of it all? Currently identifying as humanimal, woman, queer and fluid. But mostly, a hybrid form of existence, morphing between the fragmented categories of existing species.
While her performances always carry recognizable elements, she analyses routines and questions conventions, daily rhythms and their self-evidence. She sees the consequences of socio cultural praxis that affect us, whilst the peculiar element to her work is that this all cannot exist apart from her persona. Her body is therefore the pivotal space of action, the battlefield where these types of questions are asked; her ground for exploration. However, the concept is always in the lead. Therefore, the outcomes of Ros’ projects are interdisciplinary; she always uses her own body to explore, do research and investigate, but the outcome can vary between different types of media. Getting the message across is the most important aspect. Ros’ performances are marked by reiterations of the same gestures and acts, increasing the feelings of discomfort in the spectator. Ros’ body is symbol, tool and flesh at the same time.

“The Construction of Identity, and the Fluidity Thereof”

Workshop ini akan menelusuri (de)konstruksi identitas, beserta fluiditasnya. Lisette akan mengajak peserta untuk mengamati keadaan tubuh dan perilaku, mengeksplorasi berbagai cara berpikir dan berekspresi, mengaktivasi rasa, memberdayakan kerentanan diri, dan pembebasan atas kendali.
Workshop ini berbasis dari perjalanan Lisette dalam membuka dan membongkar kerentanan dalam diri, ia juga akan berbagi beberapa inspirasi dan acuan yang berkaitan secara tematik. Lisette mengharapkan workshop ini dapat menjadi proses yang membebaskan pikiran, kreativitas, serta perjalanan untuk mengenal diri sendiri.

Lisette Ros adalah seniman konseptual dan performans dari Hilversum, Belanda. Tema utama yang dibahas Lisette adalah: identitas dan fluiditasnya, keragaman penampilan, performativitas gender; mempertanyakan cara berpikir pendek, prasangka, tindakan dangkal, dan sistem sehari-hari. Baginya, yang terpenting adalah untuk belajar melihat ke dalam, mengenal kerentanan, perasaan, dan mengkondisikan diri sendiri. Lisette tertarik dengan proses membuka diri dan bagaimana menerapkannya sebagai kekuatan. Semua dalam konteks penerapan kreatif dan melihat dirinya sebagai perangkat dan wadah penampung. Sebelumnya, Lisette Ros memperoleh pengalaman selama beberapa tahun dalam membentuk dan mengajar kelas tentang (in)toleransi, diskriminasi, identitas, keragaman, dan komunitas LGBTQI+. Lisette bekerja sebagai pengajar seni performans, yang juga mengembangkan program-program kreatif untuk remaja dan dewasa.
Workshop ini terbuka untuk peserta dengan latar belakang tari, teater, dan seni performans. Jumlah peserta terbatas dan wajib mengikuti seluruh rangkaian workshop. Workshop ini tidak menarik biaya pendaftaran (gratis).

Eksperimen performans pertama: ‘(Aksi) Pencabutan’

Pada residensi ini, Lisette melanjutkan proses seri karyanya bertajuk “My Self”. Setelah menyelesaikan lima bagian sebagai seri karya, masa residensinya di Studio Plesungan dilalui Lisette dengan mengembangkan bagian keenam, yang merupakan awal tentang wacana keasingan dalam akar ke-Indonesiaannya.
“My Self” merupakan proses telisik yang berkelanjutan atas diri dan proses identifikasi. Penelusuran ini berangkat dari latar belakang kakek Lisette yang berpindah dari Indonesia ke Belanda pada tahun 1926. Tergesernya ide, kebiasaan, tradisi, sistem, perilaku sosial, dan ritme kehidupan sehari-hari, menempatkan Lisette menjadi generasi ketiga dari yang disebut sebagai ‘Indisch (Ver)zwijgen’: Sikap diam tentang kehidupan masa lalu di Indonesia. Lisette mempertanyakan rasa ketidaktahuan di atas tanah dan ruang yang asing, melalui DNA yang menyimpan ingatan di dalam tubuhnya.
Esensi ’ (Tindakan) Mencabut’, diambil dengan mencabut secara menyeluruh. ‘Mencabut’ mengacu pada proses menghilangkan sesuatu atau seseorang dari posisi aslinya, termasuk akar atau fondasinya; untuk berpindah dari lingkungan asal atau kebiasaannya, tempat asal mereka. Hal ini terkait dengan ketidakberdayaan, keterkejutan, ketakutan, duka – perasaan kehilangan identitas dan kendali atas rasa keterasingan.
