Blossoming Memory of Lights

Butoh, was originally pioneered in Japan in the 1950s. Butoh in Japan emerged along with the movement in the world of art where the avant-garde emerged to break the conventionality of art at that time. Art that uses its main medium is body and motion has the principle that our body bears the dimensions of body and soul. The body in Butoh becomes a metaphorical level of human life and death stories in its civilization. Butoh’s body is not only an actor but also a container for a process to become a new meaning. Butoh revealed the hidden reality of life.
In its history, since Butoh’s contact with the world of performing arts, especially dance in Europe, Butoh was accepted more as a dance performance. The shift of the meaning of Butoh which became a dance, became a debate for Butoh practitioners.
In its development now, Butoh gives many offers with various variations of all types of flow. For some Butoh actors, small and alternative or experimental stages such as in cafes or bars, in small galleries, alternative rooms, are still their choice to showcase their work in simplicity. Meanwhile, there are also many Butoh groups that fill the big theater stages and present Butoh with a choreographic order that refers to the aesthetics of contemporary stage.
Butoh is also in great demand by theater performers around the world. Butoh’s understanding by theater practitioners is somewhat different from those in dance orientation. The aesthetic of the archaic body and the metaphor of the body of Butoh has been adapted in the form of physical theater.
Butoh figures are known to have great influence, such as Tatsumi Hijikata, Kazuo Ohno, Maro Akaji, Yoko Ashikawa, Ushio Amagatsu, Anzu Furukawa, Katsura Kan, Kim Itoh, Waguri, Charlotta Ikeda, Min Tanaka, Saburo Teshigawara, Yoshito Ohno, and still many more, each with different method and style peculiarities, which then up to the third generation in the nineties and the fourth generation of the millennium, enrich the variety of butoh throughout the world.
Butoh has been present since the 70s in Indonesia, through several workshops given in arts communities, theaters and performing arts educational institutions. Min Tanaka, Waguri, Yoshito Ohno and Katsura Kan, are figures who have often attended Butoh performances and training. The transmission of these techniques and methods is widely channeled in various forms of creation of various dance and theater performances in Indonesia, especially for those who are involved in body theater. Such as SAE Theater, Jakarta’s Kubur Theater and Bandung’s Payung Hitam Theater are several groups that have adapted the Butoh bodily method in many of their script presentations. In the world of dance, there are many who adapt the Butoh body in their contemporary works, often combining exploration combined with new meanings of the traditional body. Marintan Sirait, a visual artist and performance art artist from Bandung, uses Butoh elements in the process of creating movement in his performance works. Marintan interprets the body a lot with the elements of time and creating atmosphere. Likewise, Tony Broer and Melati Suryodarmo also use a lot of Butoh elements in their theater works, performance art and choreography.
In short, Butoh is no longer something foreign to art practitioners and the public in Indonesia, especially in the eighties and nineties. However, appreciation and criticism do not seem to be maintained due to the decline in the number of Butoh performances. So how can we understand an art form without continously observing it developments ?
Studio Plesungan organizes Solo Butoh primarily with the aim of re-establishing the thinning chain of knowledge about Butoh and its influence in Indonesia. Solo Butoh not only presents experienced butoh artists to perform their works, but also to share their knowledge through a two-days workshop program. This series of activities is a learning event that is not only about preserving the practice of Butoh, but rather provides an opportunity and space to study it and develop further Butoh works in broader possible variations. Apart from being an option that can be offered to those who are thirsty for  knowledge about the practice of Butoh, getting to know Butoh more closely will contribute to the origins of the influence of its movements in our world of dance and theater, especially among the younger generation. Solo Butoh #3 is focusing on the learning and sharing process among the participants with the hope to enrich their methods and deepen philosophical meanings of practices within the art ecosystem and global networking.

The Laboratory

The Laboratory session invites participants to reflect upon some of the crucial issues around which we build the conditions for living together, whether in art or daily life. These issues will be addressed and challenged in both bodily and intellectual terms, by the enactment of each other’s Butoh practice, and a continuous exchange of thoughts and concerns. The Laboratory is at first to be a knowledge generating project, which does not require an end production of a work from the participants. Nevertheless, an experimentation of ideas and exchange of practices will be expected during the sharing sessions.

Katsura Kan
“Listen with the Body”
